What Is the Average Penis Size? What the Measured Data Shows

The average erect penis is 5.17 inches (13.12 cm) long and 4.59 inches (11.66 cm) in circumference. Flaccid, the average is 3.61 inches (9.16 cm) long. Those numbers come from a 2015 systematic review by Veale and colleagues in BJU International, which pooled 17 studies covering 15,521 men. The detail that makes this review the reference point rather than one dataset among many: every man in it was measured by a health professional following a standard protocol. Nobody reported his own number.

That single methodological fact explains most of the confusion around this topic, so it is worth spending a minute on before anything else.

Why almost every number you have seen is too big

There are two ways to build an average. You can have trained staff measure men in a clinic, or you can ask men to measure themselves and send in the number. The two methods do not produce the same answer, and they never have.

The Veale review deliberately excluded self-reported data for that reason. What is left — clinician-measured, standardised, pooled across continents — gives 5.17 inches erect.

Compare that with self-measured data. In a 2014 study by Herbenick and colleagues in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, 1,661 sexually active men measured themselves at home and reported a mean erect length of 5.57 inches (14.15 cm). That is roughly 0.4 inches above the clinician figure, from a study that was carefully designed and honestly conducted. The gap is not fraud. It is the predictable result of measuring yourself on a subject you have feelings about.

Informal internet polls, magazine surveys and forum threads have no protocol at all, and they drift further. When you see 6 inches or more presented as “average”, you are almost always looking at men grading their own homework.

What the difference means in practice

Roughly half an inch. That sounds trivial, and statistically it is — but it is exactly the half inch that puts a large number of men on the wrong side of a benchmark that was never real. A man who measures 5.3 inches has compared himself to a 6-inch “average” and concluded he is below it. Against the measured average, he is above it.

Where any given number actually falls

The 2015 review did not just publish a mean. It published nomograms — distribution curves — which is what lets you convert a measurement into a percentile. Erect length in that dataset has a mean of 13.12 cm with a standard deviation of about 1.66 cm, and it follows a roughly normal distribution. That distribution is narrower than most people assume. Men cluster tightly around the middle.

Some reference points, using erect length:

  • 5.0 inches (12.7 cm) — around the 40th percentile. Slightly below average, comfortably inside the normal range.
  • 5.17 inches (13.12 cm) — the mean. The 50th percentile by definition.
  • 5.5 inches (13.97 cm) — around the 70th percentile.
  • 6.0 inches (15.24 cm) — around the 90th percentile. One man in ten reaches this.
  • 7.0 inches (17.78 cm) — above the 99th percentile. Rare enough that it is close to the edge of the measured data.

Two things follow from that list. First, the range men assume is “normal or better” — 6 to 7 inches — is actually the top 10% to the top 1%. Second, the practical difference between the 30th and 70th percentile is under an inch. The distribution is not the wide spectrum it is imagined to be.

Girth follows its own distribution and is covered in average girth — the two are only loosely correlated, so a man can sit at the 30th percentile on one measure and the 70th on the other.

One honest caveat about the erect numbers

The 15,521 figure is the total across all measurements in the review, and it is not distributed evenly. Flaccid and stretched length were measured in the large majority of participants. Erect length and erect circumference were measured in far fewer — a few hundred men, since getting a clinical erect measurement is considerably harder to organise than a flaccid one.

That does not make the erect averages wrong, and they remain the best-quality figures available. But they rest on a smaller sample than the headline number suggests, and anyone quoting 5.17 inches as if it were carved into stone by 15,521 men is overstating what the paper says. The confidence intervals are real. The number is a good estimate, not a constant of nature.

The finding that matters more than the average

If the size question were really about size, the numbers above would settle it. They do not, because the distress does not track the measurement.

The largest dataset on perception is Lever, Frederick and Peplau’s 2006 survey of 52,031 people. Two figures from it:

  • 85% of women said they were satisfied with their partner’s penis size.
  • 55% of men said they were satisfied with their own.

Same population, same bodies, a 30-point gap. The women were not describing a different set of men — they were describing the same men who were dissatisfied with themselves. In the same survey 66% of men rated themselves average, 22% large and 12% small — so the dissatisfaction was not confined to the men who considered themselves small.

That is the actual finding. The problem being reported is overwhelmingly a self-assessment problem, not a measurement problem. The Lever data points the same way: the dissatisfaction sits in the self-assessment, and it does not track the measurement.

None of that is an instruction to feel differently. Being told your worry is statistically unfounded rarely dissolves it. But it does mean that if you are trying to work out whether you have a problem, the measurement is the wrong place to look for the answer — and the 45% of men in the Lever data who were dissatisfied are not simply the bottom 45% of the distribution: dissatisfaction in that survey was reported across the whole range, including by men who rated themselves average.

What “too small” means medically

There is a clinical threshold, and it is much lower than most men expect.

The term is micropenis. It is defined by stretched flaccid length more than 2.5 standard deviations below the population mean, which works out to roughly 3.67 inches (9.3 cm) or less in an adult. Because it is defined by standard deviations, its prevalence is fixed by the definition: well under 1% of men, on the order of six in a thousand. It is typically identified in infancy or adolescence and is associated with specific hormonal conditions, not with normal variation.

Practically, this means the gap between “the low end of normal” and “medically small” is wide. A man at 4.5 inches erect is at roughly the 15th percentile — toward the lower end of the distribution — and still nowhere near the clinical threshold. Almost everyone who searches whether their size is a medical problem does not have one.

If something has actually changed — a curve that developed, a loss of length or firmness over months, pain, or an injury — that is a different question from the one this article answers, and it is worth raising with a urologist. Sudden change is a medical signal. A stable measurement you dislike is not.

What the number does and does not tell you

So: 5.17 inches (13.12 cm) erect, 4.59 inches (11.66 cm) around, measured by clinicians. That is the most defensible answer available, and it is lower than the figure most men are carrying around.

What it does not tell you is much of anything about a single person. A percentile is a position in a distribution, not a verdict, and the Lever data suggests it correlates poorly with how anyone else experiences you. The one thing worth getting right is the measurement itself — because comparing a badly taken number against a well-taken average produces a false result and real anxiety.
